September beach time in Greece with kids

September is the 5th Summer month in Greece, with seas being very warm until the middle of the month and warm enough up until October! The days are shorter, which means the kids can get to bed earlier, leaving you enjoy that glass of wine in peace. The nights are not at all hot anymore, making it the perfect month to actually sleep longer. But when the sun is up, it’s beautifully warm, without that summer heat. There are fewer mosquitoes, fewer crowds, no more wild winds on the islands – it’s ideal and we’ve been choosing this month for longer or shorter getaways ever since we became parents.

Here are a few destination ideas for those of you were wise enough to choose Greece for your summer holidays with kids in September:

Santorini

Rivari Hotel on Kamari beach

Santorini is still warm now and the seas are not as chilly as in May, making swimming an amazing experience with babies. It’s also a lot less crowded, especially as September comes to an end. Hotels and restaurants are still open and thriving of course, but the cruise ships are now gone leaving this unique island to the locals and the visitors who stay longer. The red beach, the black beach and the family friendly beach at Kamari are waiting for you and your little ones – as well as the kids pool at our favorite baby friendly hotel on the island!

Paxos

Lithari Villas

Paxos is a lovely alternative to Mykonos, as it’s just as luxurious, small and gorgeous, but in a more quiet note. It’s also less busy in September and it features 2 of the top beaches in Greece on its adjacent Antipaxos island. We recommend you pick a family villa with pool, to enjoy some down time with the kids.

Messinia & Laconia

These are the two locations we choose in September for our family, as they are just 3 hours drive from Athens – but you can easily get here by air, landing at the International Airport of Kalamata. They are located in southern Peloponnese, seeing long summers and mild winters. It’s warm here even in the beginning of October and the tourist season either ends in November or never stops.

Chamaloni Cottages

These lovely cottages are located near the sandy beach of Foinikounda, a favorite among greek families. It’s a farm, with olive groves, playground and farm to table meals all day. The kids love it and so will you!

Methoni’s Finest Luxury Villas

These large, charming, budget friendly family villas with pool are also near Foinikounda, as well as the sandy cove of Methoni. There’s so much here to explore with kids, from natural landscapes (round Voidokilia beach, Yalova lagoon) to ancient monuments and waterfalls, that you’ll want to stay the whole month!

Old Sport Mansion

This family villa is 10 minutes walk from the nearest beach, close to town and within a short drive from lovely fish towns (Kitries, Kardamyli) and amazing beaches. The villa itself has a playground, a playroom and an outdoors home cinema!

Traditional Guesthouse “Liodentra”

Kardamyli is a charming sea town 40 minutes from Kalamata airport. The Old Town is filled with towers and byzantine churches. The marina is filled with gourmet restaurants, cobblestone alleys and cute little cafes. The main road has some high end shopping. And this stone-built villa with pool and a playground is set at an olive grove right on the beach! There are plenty of traditional mediterranean taverns within walking distance too! Last but not least, if you ever decide to leave this amazing property and drive for 6-10 minutes, you’ll find yourself at some of the best beaches of the area (notes: Foneas, Delfinia).

Arapakis Castle & Hotel Pandora

These boutique hotels are located next to each at the traditional village of Charia in Mani, Laconia. This part of Greece sees hot summers, so the seas are still as warm as they can get in September. The hotels are 1,5 km away from the nearest beach, which is actually next to Diros cave which you can explore by small boat. There are more beaches close by, Gerolimenas, Gyalia, Kotronas, Skoutari being some of them.

Where will you take your family this September?
