Family Road Trip in the Peloponnese in Greece

Easy to get to from Athens and with the International Airport of Kalamata bringing it closer to the world, the Peloponnese region in southern Greece sees long summers, boasts some wonderful landscape and unique architecture and has some of the best beaches in Greece. This is why I compiled for you this road trip itinerary, to explore this gem with your kids!

Corinth

We start off in Corinth. Just 1 hour from Athens, this area is rich in history and there’s plenty to see and do with kids here. With the ultimate family friendly Daphne’s Club Hotel Apartments as your base, it will be easy to explore and unwind at the same time.

Arcadia

2 hours away, you’ll find lush Mainalon mountain in the area of Arcadia. Home to many cute villages, Lousios river, its springs and waterfalls, as well as interesting interactive museums and amazing food, Arcadia is best enjoyed with a family friendly stay in Lagkadia village. We recommend Gileri eco & design residences.

Laconia

A bit over 2 hours south, lies majestic Taygetos mountain, the absolute stop on your road trip here. You’ll stay at  Ilaeira Mountain Resort, to be able to enjoy the pool and lovely meals after your hikes or your visit to historic Mystras.

1 hour away and you’ll jump into an agrotourism experience perfect for kids. Eumelia Organic Agrotourism Farm offers unique stays in eco-houses with garden, half board vegetarian 100% organic food straight from the farm, that you’ll probably picked yourself actually!

A bit south from here, you’ll find Gytheio town and then lovely Skoutari bay and its sandy beaches and creative cuisine fish taverns. Here, right on Kalamakia beach, Chara Houses are located; 5 3-floor family houses on a lush garden, fully equipped and spacious enough for 6-7 people, they are the ideal stop for a quiet beach vacation!

30 minutes away, you’ll find yourself deeper into Laconia and right in the heart of Mani peninsula and its charming stone-built villages. You’ll stay in one of these, Charia village, and in a restored tower no less, that is also family friendly and close to Diros cave and Diros beach. It’s worth spending more time here, to really immerse and discover quiet pebble beaches and magical villages.

Messinia

1 hour drive and you’ll find yourself in a completely different landscape. Messinia is lush green but just as quaint as Laconia and Kardamyli is the perfect example. Base yourself at lovely “Liodentra” Villa, to unwind in the pool and the playground, after exploring the sandy beaches of Foneas, Stoupa and more.

Not farm from here, you can also find cute Mantineia, a seaside town next to Kalamata. Old Sport Mansion is a family villa with a large garden and plenty of toys inside and outside, as well as a mini open air cinema – and it’s on the beach!

However, the sandy beach of Foinikounda bay is more than 1 hour away, so you could choose to also stay at a farm right there, with playground, organic food and so many toys!

Another half an hour drive and you’ll find yourself at this fully equipped family villa with pool near Methoni castle. From here, you can easily visit Yalova lagoon, Voidokilia round beach and Costa Navarino.

From Methoni, you can drive right to Kalamata airport and explore more!
